Orthodontists put braces on teeth to correct for jaws that don’t line up correctly, a bad bite, or teeth that have any number of problems, such as being crooked, crowded, or missing. These problems can be inherited, or they can be caused by an injury or a behavior, like thumb-sucking.
Orthodontists usually treat children with braces between 7 and 14. At that age, the bones in their faces are still developing. Adults who get braces present additional challenges because in their cases, the bones are developed already. Children can expect to wear braces for about two years, depending on the case. Adults usually have to wear braces longer than that.
